It is usually bacterial or viral and occasionally is due to fungal infections. Bacterial meningitis is more serious and whilst most cases in the UK and Ireland are caused by meningococcal bacteria, many other bacteria can cause meningitis as well.

Meningitis is an infection and inflammation of the fluid and three membranes (meninges) protecting your brain and spinal cord. The tough outer membrane is called the dura mater, and the delicate inner layer is the pia mater.
